I have been hearing that tat-tat-tat of a woodpecker for the last couple of days, but I was never able to spot him. Then today as I was out taking pictures of some counters I finally saw him. He is just waaaay smaller than what I was expecting. For a little bird he is really noisy! So it looks like we will have a nest of baby birds in our backyard soon as this little guy has been very busy hollowing out a tree. Or I guess it should be her instead of him.Does anyone know what kind of bird she is?

your pretty birdy looks to me like some sort of nuthatch...The ones here in wisconsin have white breasts, but you can always do a little research about them!

I can't quite figure it out.. there's a great site at http://www.whatbird.com/ that allows you to put in the characteristics of the bird and it will point you in the right direction. :)
Good luck!
Great pictures.
The little red-breasted nuthatches are such delightful little birds. Very friendly and cute.
Here in SW Michigan we get them at the feeders in the winter, but come spring they head north for their nesting.
Well, we are certainly north of you, Marguerite! I think I am really going to enjoy these little birds. Cant wait for the babies!
